Smoking at home significantly increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), according to a recent Australian study.
The study, which was published in the journal of Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, continued an investigation from a 2007 study on sudden infant death due to cigarette smoke exposure. What these studies continue to find is that smoke exposure causes significant brain cell death among infants and of the 67 babies who died of SIDS in the research group, 81 percent were exposed to cigarette smoke at home.
This study is a perfect example of how smoking not only affects our health it also affects those around us. For this reason, our smoking cessation Houston program works with patients on making a life-long commitment to health and a smoke-free life.
Smokers can face many challenges when trying to kick the habit, such as dealing with their physiological and psychological dependence on tobacco. The highly addictive nature of smoking and nicotine makes it a very difficult habit to quit, even in face of all the evidence showing that it is detrimental to both our health and our families’ health. Having a trained smoke cessation specialist who knows what you are going through can make a big difference in the process.
