"Low T" Treatment

Testosterone is the key hormone in men's health – it builds muscle, helps to maintain bone strength and supports the libido. While a decline in testosterone with age is normal, the symptoms from "low T" can greatly affect the health and well-being of a man.

What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is a type of androgen hormone which is mostly produced by the testicles in males. Testosterone is responsible for many of the masculinizing characteristics of the body in addition to controlling mood, strength, and energy. The affects of testosterone include:

  • Development and maturation of reproductive organs
  • Maintaining sexual drive and function
  • Muscle growth and bone mass
  • Mood and irritability
  • Growth of body hair
  • Weight maintenance
What is Low Testosterone or "Low T"?

The amount of testosterone that is "normal" for any given male largely depends on individual factors, such as age, which are unique to each patient. As men get older the amount of testosterone that is produced by the testes declines slowly by 1-2% each year. Some men may experience a loss of hormone production earlier in life leading to many uncomfortable and potentially harmful side effects.

Unfortunately, there is no consensus among medical professionals as to exactly what level a man may be considered to have low testosterone. In fact, many men who are symptomatic, but have "normal" testosterone levels in their blood tests are often misdiagnosed with other various conditions. This is why at IMC we work with each of our patients independently to optimize their levels based upon their individual symptoms and unique clinical factors.

Symptoms of Low Testosterone:
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Loss of muscle and bone strength
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Decreased exercise tolerance
  • Decreased mental sharpness and memory
  • Poor recovery from injury
  • Depression
  • Loss of motivation
  • Decreased body hair
  • Weight gain
How is Low Testosterone Treated?

The type of treatment that we recommend for low testosterone depends on each individual's unique symptoms and clinical profile. At IMC, our preferred route of testosterone replacement is through the insertion of a time-released pellet under the skin three times a year. However, it may also be administered by a cream-used twice daily or as an intramuscular injection every 7-10 days. Talk with your IMC healthcare provider for more details.
